Thankful People Are Happy
“It is not happy people who are thankful;
It is thankful people who are happy.”
I don’t know who said it, but there is a lot of truth in that statement. That’s one of our core values here at the SixEight Food Pantry – gratitude. We have so much to be thankful for!
I know we don’t always feel that way. And I’ll be honest with you, I too can have a hard time being thankful. When I’m having a hard day and things aren’t going the way I thought they would, or the way I wished they would – then it’s easy to become ungrateful. It’s easy to start getting mad at people and blaming them for my problems. It’s easy to start feeling like nothing good ever happens to me. “Why do bad things happen to good people?!?”
But, what I’ll eventually remember is that I am an extremely blessed person. I have an amazing wife and kids. I have an amazing church. I live in a country where so much is provided for me. If I’m struggling there are a lot of great resources available to me. And even those who are the worst off in our country are better than some of those who have it best in others. I’m a pretty blessed person. I have much to be thankful for.
There’s a checkpoint for gratitude. And that’s entitlement. When I start feeling entitled to certain things, I’m probably not being grateful for them. That’s good for me to remember. When that entitled mentality starts to show his ugly face in my life, there is almost certainly an area where I’m not being grateful for all that I have.
And that’s important to us at the 6:8 food pantry. We want to help those who come through our doors be grateful. Because we know it’s a much better way to be.
What do you have today to be thankful for?
